This empty tomb in Sante Croce itself presents the name and likeness and hails him the most exalted poet.
But Il Sommo Poeta is not here. Forbidden on multiple occasions durirng his life to return to his beloved Florence, his remains are in Ravenna in a tomb constructed for him by a Venetian outside the Church of San Pier Maggiore later called San Francesco.
