Although it is now called Dante's Church, this was originally Chiesa Santa Margherita de' Cerchi.
It is first recorded in 1032 and is said -- but not widely accepted -- to have been the location of Dante's marriage to Gemma Donati in 1285 or 1290.
It was certainly the Donati family's parish church and also contains several tombs of the Portinari family.
Dante records he only saw Beatrice twice; first at the age of eight at her home during a May Day party, the second time on the street nine years later. The second encounter could well have happened outside this door as she might well have attended services here and Dante's home was nearby
