So here he is, the Donald Trump of the 19th century.
The ur-White Nationalist storming the Capitol ahead a horde of border ruffians with muddy boots. And in the process creating one new political party -- and causing another to form in reaction; he was the first president to be physically attacked, the first -- in a separate incident -- to be attacked with murderous intent and the first to be censured by the Senate.
His administration is mostly remembered for the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Panic of 1837 caused by his destruction of the Bank of the United States, the consequent proliferation of sketchy local and state banks leading to the issuance of his Specie Circular requiring all transactions with the federal government -- i.e., land sales -- be made in silver or gold.
Out of 850 banks in the United States, 343 closed entirely, 62 failed partially, and the system of State banks received a shock from which it never fully recovered. It took six or seven years before a real recovery occurred.
The Indians? That's another story.
