Did the S. O. B. plant it himself? It looks old enough, but I suspect it was junior who though he could not keep the place up, never sold off anything but land until he got the Volunteer State to take it.
The house is a jewel of astonishingly high-19th century style -- I mean Paris standards -- with the family furnishings still in place. An amazing time capsule from the 1830s; it was at the time the most fashionable home in Tennessee.
